Recovery Counselor I - Thunder Road: Sutter Health

As part of the Alta Bates Summit Medical Center in Berkeley and Oakland, California, Thunder Road is a substance abuse treatment program for adolescents in Northern California. Thunder Road was established in January 1987, and its mission is to: Assist youth and their families in the challenges to recover from the abuse of alcohol, drugs and nicotine, and to support their growth as healthy, connected and honorable members within our neighborhoods and communities.

The Recovery Counselor I (RCI) provides rehabilitation support services as part of a multidisciplinary team with the goal to assist clients, correct or ameliorate mental health and substance abuse impairments or conditions. The RCI provides support services designed to maintain or restore personal independence and functioning consistent with the requirements for learning and development. The RCI monitors clients' completion of treatment assignments, learning experiences, and adherence to program expectations. This position provides close and constant supervision of adolescent clients to ensure the safety of the client and community. This position promotes the mission of Thunder Road to employees, clients, families and the community at large.
High School Diploma, GED or equivalent combination of education and experience. BA/BS preferred or actively pursuing.

One year prior experience working with adolescents in a residential, mental health or similar setting preferred.

Strong interpersonal skills. Ability to communicate effectively. Ability to read and write, and compose routine reports/correspondence; follow verbal and written instructions. Knowledge of 12 steps strongly preferred. Ability to work in a team-oriented environment. Establishing appropriate and professional boundaries. Familiarity with OSHA/HIPAA requirements relating to Rehabilitation Facilities, including but not limited to Health and Safety protocols, ie. blood borne pathogens, infection control.

License, cert, and/or registration req.

Have a valid, Class C California Driver's License, or an administrative waiver. First Aid and CPR certification.

Special Requirements:
1. Minimum 21 years of age.
2. Be free of, and have had the last two years prior to employment free of, any chemical dependency.
3. Completion of a pre-placement physical examination including drug screening.
4. Satisfy all statutory and regulatory requirements to qualify as a child care worker in a group home licensed by the California Department of Social Services (CDSS). Without limiting this, the applicant/incumbent must pass the various security checks required by the CDSS and by any other agencies with jurisdiction over Thunder Road, ie, LifeScan fingerprinting.
