POSITION SUMMARY: The
Lab Specialist II will perform a variety of tasks including creating
digital images pertaining to otopathology research, organization of
media archiving, and assisting in the preparation and processing of
temporal bones for otopathology research. He/she will also maintain and
manage the databases of the Temporal Bone Registry. The Lab Specialist
II will also independently coordinate & manage all departmental
multi-media needs and efforts such as newsletters, powerpoint
presentations and research posters. The individual must work
collaboratively with multiple constituencies including physicians,
principal investigators, research personnel, administrators and outside
vendors. The individual will need to function autonomously and exercise
excellent judgment in the formulation & implementation of
recommended strategies for project completion.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: • Acts as Otopathology Lab photomicrography specialist, for archiving, publications and preservation of materials. •
Creates, labels, maintains and archives images of teaching value from
temporal bone cases contained in the MEEI collection, under supervision
of Drs. Merchant and Nadol. • Creates and maintains a web-based
collection of digital temporal bone images of teaching value, for the
national Temporal Bone Consortium Assists in the preparation and processing of temporal bones for otopathology research. • Creates, manages, updates and maintains the database of otopathology case reports in the MEEI temporal bone collection •
Manages the Temporal Bone Registry reporting database, which includes
reports of ~ 10,000 cases contained in 20+ labs nationwide. • Performs database searches and generates reports for inquiries from researchers nationwide on the Registry's database. •
Performs regular updates of the Registry's databse by contacting Lab
directors nationwide and coordinating the acquisition of data, working
in concert with the Registry's Coordinator. • Sends updated versions of the database to NIH and other Labs semiannually •
Manages department multi-media projects, including creation &
design of media content to meet client specifications, including
newsletters, powerpoint presentations and research posters. • Works closely with investigators and research personnel on research project poster development and production. • Consults across the department on projects requiring graphic design elements. • Develops new image techniques responding to technology requirements and advances • Maintains Department of Otolaryngology photographic history and responsible for archiving of existing collections as needed • Consults and recommends hardware/software solutions and strategies • Troubleshoots PC programs and support end-users

| Requirements |
Bachelors
Degree. Seven (7) to ten (10) years experience in multi-media computer
applications, including knowledge of digital photography, working in a
scientific and healthcare environment. Familiarity with multiple
complex software applications (including but not limited to: Microsoft
(Access, Excel, Powerpoint), Photoshop, Illustrator, html web page
development, other database applications & management). Knowledge
of computer programming and hardware/peripheral technologies. Must be
able to trouble-shoot and synthesize work-able solutions as well as
work independently and be able to meet deadlines.

MULTI-MEDIA PROJECTS:

9. Reliably maintains and updates the Temporal Bone Registry databases
