Primary Function of Position:

The Medical Advisor conducts early and pre-clinical scientific research and/or development. This position will investigate the feasibility of applying a wide variety of scientific principles and concepts to potential inventions, products and problems. The Medical Advisor plans and executes laboratory research and maintains broad knowledge of state-of-the-art principles and theories. The role may participate in development of patent applications. This position interfaces with various departments.

Roles and Responsibilities: This position has responsibility and authority to:

  • Medical Research

    • Take the lead on developing new clinical applications in forward looking surgical arenas:

    • Identify and work with thought leaders and key surgical teams

    • Conduct experimental clinical labs with animate and inanimate models

    • Evaluate potential for new clinical areas, and serve as an advocate for these procedures in feeding the Clinical Development pipeline

    • Develop early procedure guides and white paper analyses of new clinical areas to facilitate early institutional learning

    • Work with internal departments to identify and evaluate new technologies for incorporation into robotic surgical platforms to expand system capabilities

    • Identify and work with technical researchers and companies with high potential for synergistic technologies

    • Conduct experimental clinical labs with candidate technologies

    • Evaluate clinical potential for new technologies, and serve as an advocate for these technologies in the Product Development pipeline

    • Support and monitor collaborative technological development through the Research Grant Program

    • Support clinical IDE studies

Early Product Development

  • Support clinical evaluation of prototype instrumentation with outside surgeons and at research partner sites

  • Support Clinical Development Engineering and Product Engineering during transition of research projects into Product Development

  • Identify potential product enhancements & new ideas by applying an analytical approach to understanding the clinical needs of surgeons

Assist with pre-clinical validations and design iteration assessments of products

Other

  • Keep the organization's vision and values at the forefront of decision making and action

  • Perform other duties as required to support the company's overall strategy and goals



In order to adequately perform the responsibilities of this position the individual must have:

  • M.D. or PhD Degree in Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or similar
  • Minimum of 4 years of experience in medical device industry preferred
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in academic or commercial research with publications in peer reviewed journals
  • Fluent in medical terminology and sound practical knowledge of anatomy and the medical field
  • Excellent teamwork skills with proven ability to collaborate across multiple disciplines to ensure product success and ability to influence cross-functional teams without formal authority.
  • Experience with evaluating early stage technology
  • Self-starter needing minimal supervision
  • Self confident and able to react quickly under pressure
  • Ability to travel up to 25%, international and domestic
