Sterling Bank's Senior Commercial Banker develops and manages a loan portfolio of commercial banking relationships for prospective and existing customers and assists in managing the banking function of a bank office. Duties include: selling commercial loan products to prospective and existing customers; underwriting and processing loans within guidelines; communicating terms and loan status; cross selling banking products and services; providing day-to-day supervision of bank office banking staff; performing duties on behalf of the Market CEO or Regional Commercial Banking Manager; and providing excellent customer service. Individual performs duties without supervision and provides supervision or support as needed to other office banking staff. Individual is responsible for the quality, growth and profitability of their portfolio and of the assigned bank office; for completing assigned functions efficiently, accurately and in a timely fashion; and for ensuring that service expectations are met or exceeded.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Completion of a Formal Credit Training program
  • Bachelors's degree in a related field
  • At least seven years of progressively more responsible experience in the development of major lending and deposit relationships with Commercial and Industrial businesses in the Houston market
  • Proven ability to generate average Commercial and Industrial loans of $2-10 million in the Houston market
  • Proven ability to manage a commercial loan and deposit portfolio of at least $25 million in the Houston market
  • Experience cross-selling banking products and services in the Houston market
  • Three years progressively more responsible experience in management and/or supervisory roles
  • Excellent ability to solve problems; must possess excellent analytical skills
  • Ability to work well in a team environment
  • Ability to cross sell banking products and services
  • Ability to make sound judgments and decisions and have an understanding of how decisions affect the customer, department, office and the organization as a whole
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills
  • Strong sales and marketing skills; ability to sell to middle market business customers
  • Proven team-building, mentoring, training and coaching skills
  • Intermediate-level computer competency to include Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Outlook)
  • Working knowledge of banking systems such as Fidelity, Treev, Bankware, Decision Pro, B2B, etc.
  • Thorough knowledge of commercial loan and real estate products (owner occupied/interim construction, working capital LOC, SBA, warehouse lines, etc.), policies, processes and procedures as well as other bank products and services as related to area of responsibility



Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) highly desirable
  • Advanced degree


  • Duties:

    • Builds and maintains a portfolio of commercial and real estate loans(owner occupied/interim construction, working capital LOC, warehouse lines, etc) using established lending policies and procedures
    • Refers SBA, international trade, energy and/or other profit center loans to the appropriate department
    • Leads, guides and directs the Bank Office Banking staff
    • Supervises assigned staff and participates in recruiting, hiring, training, counseling, discipline, and evaluation
    • Assists in designing and implementing strategies to ensure growth and profitability of the office
    • Underwrites loan applications utilizing credit scoring software and/or established guidelines; analyzes and verifies credit reports and application information; requests additional information as necessary
    • Communicates loan decision, status and terms to applicant
    • Directs the servicing of loans; manages payoffs, refinances, loan work-out arrangements, monitors and clears exceptions
    • Responds to and resolves inquiries from current and prospective customers, bank office and central department staff
    • Maintains loan files and data utilizing established systems
    • Cross sells bank products and services
    • Participates actively in business development and officer call programs
