Working under the direction of the Interpreter Services Program Coordinator, the interpreter provides concise, objective and accurate interpretation in person or by telephone throughout the medical center in one of the high usage languages (Spanish, Cantonese, Mandarin, and Vietnamese). Assist provider and staff with culturally appropriate communication and assists patients in overcoming anxiety and fear while maintaining objectivity. Assist with support functions including scheduling patients for appointment, data retrieval from patient call-in-lines, taking patients' to ancillary department on campus for follow- up/clinic testing
Education: Minimum High School Diploma or GED required; Bachelor's degree in a 2nd language or healthcare related field is preferred. Completion of an interpreter-training course as a medical interpreter required. Basic knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, signs and symptoms required. Experience: Prior experience as an interpreter/translator, as would typically be gained in two years working in this role, is required. Previous experience working in a hospital or clinic setting is preferred. Knowledge: Fluent in oral and written English, and either Spanish, Cantonese, Mandarin or Vietnamese and satisfactory completion of the Sutter language competency assessment. Must have the ability to translate the names of body parts and to describe competently symptoms and injuries in both fluent languages. Knowledge of community resources and mandate state/federal program requirements (i.e. JCAHO, Title 22, ADA) is preferred. Special Skills/Equipment: Knowledge and proficient use of Microsoft Office including Word and Excel. Must have effective oral and written communication skills. Must have excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to professionally interact and communicate appropriately with patients, their families, visitors and the healthcare team composed of staff RN's Physicians, Therapists, Social Workers and ancillary staff. Must be knowledgeable about community resources for non-English speakers and have the ability to interact effectively with these groups.
