Your need to be certified and you need to be in the union.
You do realize you live on the rig for months?
A:
Yes.......certainly a journeyman's card or a Master welders certificate........along with a union card.. You would be gone for months at a time........if you ever got that far......

My brother got a placement on an oil rig with no experience. He started just as a general hand and then worked his way up a little. I think when he first started he was just cleaning and washing peoples clothes..But I guess once you had your foot in the door you could look to get into the welding side of things

Yes, you need experience after training. Offshore is dangerous, and they only want the best and most experienced -- and the most safety-conscious! -- workers. Offshore is bound to increase in coming years. So you would have a future if you can make the grade.
Your wife, however, may object to your absences since you work rotations. Could be 3 weeks on, one week off. Actually, that's very good, very workable relationship-wise and other-wise. But a lot of wives hate anything other than a predictable 9-5. I know CPAs' wives who get bent out of shape over their husband's long hours one week per quarter doing quarterlies! Discuss with your wife. Is she a full partner, a real trooper, or ??? You've got a long way to go to get to where you want. You two had better agree to make it work before you start.
