Is it appropriate to post a petition in the workplace against same-sex marriage?
Asked by Angela
It has nothing to do with the industry in which I work, and I feel that it is very inappropriate. Can I do something about this? The petition has been posted to be signed in the lobby.
I should probably make my post a little clearer- I did not put up the petition. I do not think something that has to do with politics or religion should be made a part of the workplace. How can I get rid of it?

Who post the petition up?
What will happen if you don't sign the petition?
But you are right. The petition has nothing to do with the industry in which you work, so it should be taken off..talk with human resource about it.

Be careful about voicing any opinion on politics, religion, or any controversial topic in this economy if you are an at will employee. An at will employee is one not covered by union or written employment contract and can be terminated with or without reason, with or without notice. While it is illegal to terminate someone due to discrimination (see www.eeoc.gov) the remedy for an employee terminated due to discrimination is a compliant to the EEOC and possibly a court fight.
So, in today's poor economy where jobs are scare, it is not a good idea to voice any opinion. You never know if it was the boss or his relative or a favored employee that put up the petition. And if you were to go to HR and complain that this opened up the company to a controversy -- which would be true --- you do not know who would be ticked off because of your complaint.
Yes, it is true that issues of politics, religion, or other controversies should not be aired in an employment situation and common sense would tell us that it is not appropriate to be posted there. BUT you do not want to be the one who sticks their neck out and complains.
Legally an employer can allow this. For all you know your boss or the CEO is responsible for this. Ignore this and keep your head down.

People have the right to do what they feel as long as it doesnt harm anyone else. Being married to the same sex does not harm anyone. Posting a petition against it does... So, no, I dont think its appropriate.
