First, realize that almost every job in advertising and PR IS sales. The key exceptions to this are jobs Advertising and PR that are research and quantitative/metrics based. Sales is a great way to understand how a specific (or sometimes general) market act. It also gives you a greater understanding of what, as as PR/Advertising person, you will be supporting. So yes, being successful in sales can be a good start.
I'm in HR and have a sales and marketing background.

Sales is where a lot of people start who end up in advertising. It helps you learn about how the industry works and who does what which is really important. Ensure you are open minded when you do the internship and try to learn about all types of media. You learn about agencies so when you try to get into advertising, you know about other roles and understand what others deal with day to day. Also PR, is a form of sales, you're trying to sell a concept to media so although money isn't involved, you're still selling your product in a certain way.
