Yeah, they can do that. It sucks and I know how you feel. I'm right in the middle of trying to get a new job. I've been working at this place for about 8 months, part-time (full-time college student), and fortunately they gave me 4 weeks notice that they'll have to lay off some part-time workers. I can't say I'm surprised because for the last two months, they haven't been giving me any sort of substantial hours. I was down to about 10-12 hours a week, sometimes not even full shifts. It was sort of inevitable. I'm sorry they did that to you. Hope you find a new job.

Companies don't have to give you two week notice.

If you are in the US, and in a "work at will" job, then two weeks notice is a professional courtesy. In a "work at will" situation, you can leave or be fired for any reason or no reason at all, and without notice. Exceptions to this are if you signed a contract that stipulated a notice, or are part of a union that negotiated this.

A 2 week notice is only asked for if someone is leaving the company. If one wants to try to use that place as a business reference in the future it's wise to do that if one is able to. An employer isn't ever required to give any more notice than to say that you are let go. I know they need to do that in person as one can say they never got the phone call and/or the notice if mailed, which I haven't heard mail one.
I would not plan to use them as a job reference in getting let go since the prior boss didn't call you about the firing/letting go either.
If you worked there an adequate time then you can get unemployment if you file for it in a short time after the letting go happened. I would check with a state employment agency or online on how to file for that. Not sure how much they'll give or how long for but you should be able to get some in that especially since it's during a recession.
