I don't know about the cable co's but to work for Verizon all you have to do is apply on line for an open job. You will be called (eventually) to take a test. If you pass the test you will then be put on the job list. As the positions open they hire by the list. No special training is required. Once you get called for the job all the training is paid for and you get paid while you are in training. As far as the pay scale it depends on what part of the country you live in and what union you get into. The pay scale is base on your employment. The raises are also determined by the contract with raises every year till you get to "top pay" If you are called for a job even if it isn't in the title you want take it because you will be able to "bid" into other departments as the jobs open.
