How should I report my Spanish-speaking ability when applying for a job?
Asked by titaniaqueen
I want to be positive about it, but I don't want to misrepresent my ability. I am able to have a casual conversation, and I am able to read and write well, with a fair amount of reference checks...I was close to fluent in high school, but haven't spoken much since outside of visits and conversations with my Spanish relatives, and my mother...what's a good way to say "I get it, but I'm not that great"?

It depends on what kind of job it is and how you would need to use your spanish.
If you're required to write lengthy documents in spanish then I would be as modest as possible.
If you're required to use a lot of technical terminology then I would also be as modest as possible.
However if you're only required to be able to hold a casual conversation then I would say Fluent in Spanish, as long as you really can hold a casual conversation.
Just be sure that you bone up on any terms that you may not be sure of but may require.

I would break it down to reading, writing and speaking. If you read and write better than you speak, I would write something along the lines of:
reading - fluent
writing - fluent
speaking - proficient
If fluent and proficient seem a little overkill, "fair" or "good" might still give you an edge. ;)
