How can I become a Territory Sales Manager with little sales experience?
Asked by Thomas A
I live in Omaha Nebraska. My friend is a Territory Manager and does very well. I know I could do what he does but I just don't have a Business Degree or years of sales experience to get a call back about a job. I have no $ or time to go back to school. I have a B.S. in Computer Science and 1 year of experience in Customer Service/Sales at a bank.

You probably won't start as manager-start on the ground floor work like hell, make lots of sales and when the position comes open if they think you will be good for the job. then you have a chance. Start taking college courses soon as you get a job some companies help pay for this.

I was just offered a sales job and have never ever sold as a profession in my life! They looked at my rez and interviewed me. They told me my superior communication and style and demenor skills were better than anyone they had ever had come in for a very long while. They offered me a sales position and I am 50 Yrs old and a risk. If you look like a pro, act like a winner, and make your interviewer think they are the most special of persons on this earth without going totally overboard, this will be YOUR story, too!

The key is to keep trying: if you get a few nos keep calling and applying until you find a yes (sales is like this, too). It only takes one yes. I would also read up on sales. I'd recommend a few resources: salesguy.org publishes lists of the top hiring criteria, top sales traits and a good newsletter; millerheiman's newsletter is good and worth registering for; The Top 25 Habits of Successful Sales People is a great Sales 101 book to teach you the basics of how to be a good sales person. Salesguy.org also publishes a list of the Top Sales Books as recommended by sales people.
