Why would someone choose to be a Medical Assistant over being an LPN?
Asked by Valerie
I can't see why anyone would choose to be an MA instead of an LPN. LPN training costs about half as much and they make more money! What is the benefit to be an MA? From what I've seen they do a lot of the same things as well. I am just confused. What are the differences? Is being an MA even worth it?

Some people don't want to be nurses and want to work in doctor's offices--the MA is perfect for them. Not all doc's employ nurses as they have gotten too expensive; so if you wanted to be an office -based person, you might have to work as a MA. Also, easier to get into MA school. MAs do very little true nursing as they are mostly office or clinic based. They assist the doc, do labs, draw blood, give meds etc. If someone really really didn't want to do ANY nursing at all--even in nursing school....well; the MA appeals. As to if its worth it, if you are really good & can get a great jon--then yes. We employ EMTs and MAs in our walk-in clinic & they have a great job. They do EVERYTHING. They love doing the procedures.

Regarding medical assistants: From the US dept. of labor, "Although not required, certification indicates that a medical assistant meets certain standards of competence. " So, this is a job you can walk into by just knowing a few people in an office and usually is had with in-service on-the-job training. LPNs are usually better prepared and may get somewhat better jobs. But, I would check out the job I want and see what kind of qualifications it requires. The duties of an RN would be substantially greater but the pay would also be greater. You really must go into some Drs' offices and ask what jobs require what level of education. You may be surprised.
