How long does it take to become a nurse or a medical assistant?
Asked by Natasha M
I'd like to become a registered nurse or even a medical assistant, but I don't have much time(18months or so). Can anyone tell me if this is possible?

Best Answer:
Medical Assistant = 12-18 months
Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN, also called Licensed Vocation Nurse or LVN in some states) = 12-18 months
Registered Nurse = minimum of an Associates Degree, which is a 2 year program, but with pre-requisite courses it's more like 3 years realistically
If you have to choose between MA and LPN, go the LPN route. You will have tons of trouble finding a job as an MA - the market is oversaturated because of all these for-profit schools pumping out too many MA grads. You are limited to working in clinics, there is very little room for opportunity to advance, and the education / classes you take do not transition well to other schools, especially nursing programs.
As an LPN, you can find work in a wider variety of settings. Unlike an MA, which is just a school-provided certification, the LPN is an actual professional license which is regulated by the state government. Therefore it makes you worth more professionally. As an LPN you will also be able to later complete your RN in about another 12-18 months. If you're lucky you can find an employer where you will work as an LPN and they will pay tuition reimbursement for you to complete your RN.
An RN is worth even more, and the job opportunities are endless. You would never be without a job, as there is a nursing shortage that will only get worse in the next decade or two. You will make much better money, have more flexibility, etc.
Good luck!

You could probably do medical assisting in that time. For a RN degree is about 4 years not including prerequistes.

if u don't have any medical experience before, medical assistant is right for u. then if u in future wants to become RN it'll be easier for u cuz injections and other stuff. Medical Assistant is 8-12 months depending the school MA salary is 13-25 hour.
