What is a good salary to ask for, for a controller/office manager position that will turn into vice president? of finance? I was thinking 20.00 + but I am not a cpa and this is in cheap florida? also the job starts out 20-25 hours a week, but the president told me that the company will boom the next few months and he needs someone to take over the whole finance department. the hours would then go to 30-35 hours a week, but he said the hours are VERY flexible.

You should first take a look at what benefits are going to be offered to you. A lot of companies require you to work a certain amount of hours to be eligible for Medical insurance and such. If you are only working 20-25 hours per week you might not be eligible to purchase discounted employee benefits. If this is the case you will be paying an arm and a leg for benefits if you decide to purchase them on your own. If you will be able to get benfits as a part-time employee then you should look at what your bills are and how much you will need. You should never base your pay based on what "might" happen but what you actually have now. So if you are going to be working 20-25 hours you need to make sure you are able to pay bills, etc. There are 2,000 hours in an average work year (40 hours per week with two weeks off for holidays and vactation). So to figure out what your hourly rate equals as a yearly income you just multipy your hourly rate by 2,000. so if you want $20/hr you are looking at making $40k. Since you are only working 20 hours you will make $20k. $20k seems like a really low salary even if it is part time. Keep in mind this is BEFORE taxes, can you survive on that? Good luck.

typically these type positions are classified by salary in the per year catagory, not by per hour. You may want to look at it from that perspective. However, when stating your required salary, be sure its understood to be at the 20-25 hour per week basis and that you will require a salary review before accepting anything more than the 20-25 hour schedule. I am self employed and am glad i don't have to deal with bosses.

If you would be a controller transitioning into a VP, they should offer you a salary, exempt from overtime. It should be enough for you to live on and not feel guilty about when you're going to have to work overtime. But note, like you said, since you are not a CPA or someone with an advanced degree in finance, so be aware that they will probably hire someone over you for that role.

I wouldn't state a salary requirement....I would ask what the salary scale is for that position. All companies have a salary range for every position so they should tell you what it is.

If 20 an hour is cheap where you live. Go for it. Let them know you know your stuff and assure them they will not regret their decision.
