Is wearing a black shirt on an interview for a part time job is improper?
Asked by Steve T
I have an interview tomorrow for a second part time job and it just so happens I ruined my white shirt tonight, so Im wondering if it would make me look unprofessional to wear a black button down collared shirt. The interview is for nothing that special (not that I dont want it), just a part time bartender/management position. Its right after my day time job and have no time to shop for a new one. Thanks for the input.

I think the black shirt should be fine for an interview for a bartending position. You will want to match the trousers, and wear a blazer, if you have one. Wearing a blazer (grey, beige, tweed . . . any neutral) will break up an all-black look. Also, go prepared to answer questions about what you consider to be your assets (e.g., attentiveness to detail and customers), as well as what you consider to be your weaknesses (e.g., not taking compliments as gracefully as you might). This should help you in the interview process, along with a direct manner. Fingers crossed, in hopes that you get what you want . . .

Borrow a shirt if you can, if not wear what you have. Maybe you can go out to lunch and get a shirt.

I think it depends on the bar that you would be bartending. A nice black button down can look professional and somewhat trendy. If it matches the culture/atmosphere of the bar, by all means wear it. Bartenders are supposed to have a personality and be fun, the shirt might make you stick out from other candidates. If it doesn't match the bar's atmosphere, then I agree with the other poster that you should take a lunch break and buy or borrow a more appropriate shirt. Good luck with your interview!

As long as the shirt is neat, presentable, and somewhat dressy i don't see any harm in wearing it. Just focus on your overall appearance if you can and make sure you look sharp.
