Career Questions and Answers
recent college grad and convicted felon trying to start a career. . .advice?
Asked by mikeles99
I am 27 and since graduating from college about two years ago I have been unable to find a career due to a felony conviction. Approx. six months before I graduated I got into a bar fight and ended up with a 3rd degree assault charge. I don't have any history of violence other than this. I was honestly in the wrong place at the wrong time . I am waiting tables and make good money, but I went to college so I could get out of the restaurant industry. Any advice other than "be honest". . .that doesn't help!

Sucks man!
There is a possibility that the charge could be reduced to not show up as a felony. Depends on the state and all. Defintely go to a laywer, I know they cost and that sucks too, but that might be the way to go.
If that doesn't work then you may have to strike out on your own.

You might be able to get that conviction expunged; definitely talk to a lawyer or this will follow you around forever. In the meantime, get a job like telemarketing where they don't check your references. If necessary, lie on your app; in the private sector they do not check, as a rule, and why not be working when you should be? Unfair. Go for it. Honesty is NOT always the best policy!
