How can i get work in an office environment if i have qualifications but no relevany experience?
Asked by PAUL D
I have been applying for positions in office environments. I feel that I can do the jobs I have been applying for and have relevant university qualifications. However as I have no real admin experience I feel this must be stopping me from gaining these positions. How can I get round this, any ideas?

Apply for entry level positions. Everyone has to start somewhere - and while you may be overqualified or overeducated for an entry level, this will get your foot in the door. Once hired, accept every project/assignment and work hard. Those above you will notice and you will most likely be promoted quickly.

would you consider offering to volunteer for the first month and if it works out then 'contract' to get hired? The benefit would be that even if it doesn't turn into a job, you'll begin building this kind of experience for your resume.
are there places you can be tested on your expertise with respect to software, typing skills, etc.? Do you have certificates in these areas yet? Obtaining 'proof' of your technical abilities would help too.

Many companies offer internships. Although you don't get paid much (possibly even just a small living allowance), you will build up your own personal experience as well as your reputation within the company. Your bosses will know how good you are, you'll have the opportunity to prove it doing "real" work rather than under evaluation conditions. If you use your time well and show a good attitude, then you will likely get a good opportunity to stay within the company.
Even if you don't (or choose not to), you've got some good experience on your resume, and an internship shows other potential employers that you're willing to learn, and also that despite your qualifications and education, you're not too proud to start at the bottom. Plus, it's likely that your boss would give you a nice recommendation even if they don't keep you on - after all you did some useful work for very little pay.
To find out if a company has them, either look on their website (larger companies often have a "careers with us" type section), or just write them a nice letter. After all, you're not asking for much, and it's a great opportunity for the company as well - they might find themselves with a talented worker who will be loyal to the company for many years because of this first opportunity, or at the very least they get someone who's only asking for experience and able to do a job for a while.
