I turned down a job. What should I have done?
Asked by al b
I am a HVAC tech who had a job as a assistant service manager of an apartment complex since 2004. The building was sold and I was the only person offered a job by the new management. I feel that I deserved the service manager position and was disapointed that they did not offer it to me. They bought another guy in for that job and offered me a "tech" position(a step down in title). They are also bringing in another "tech" who has been with that company for over five years. I feel like they wanted to use me for my knowledge of the building and then I would be expendable. I know I can find another job, and I have another offer. But was I right to turn it down? I have other ideas of why I didn't get the offer, but none of them had anything to do with my job performance.

sounds completely legitimate. i dont like that concept of showing your new boss the ropes and then you have to take orders from him. its an illogical system i would have done exactly the same thing you did. to hell with getting used like that. and it sounds like youl be alright finding a new job, so everything sounds cool.

You could have done what I did. My manager was using me to learn how to use visual basics, but i never taught her anything. You should have taken the job, but not reveal your secrets.

If you didn't want the job and you have other opportunities, nothing is wrong with the decision you made. In smaller companies, decisions are made all of the time that are based on everything, but logic and fairness. It could be one of the other people knew somebody or was owed a favor. If you are an HVAC tech, start your own business and make lots of money and have your own flexibility.

I do not blame you for quitting. I did the same thing and I never regretted it. I have a much better job now and I never looked back. New owners always want to bring in their own people so this is not news. HVAC techs are in demand. You can find a job easily in this field because there is not a lot of you out there. Make sure you prepare a resume that would highlight your experience and knowledge. Make sure you are also prepared to answer "why did you quit your last job?" to a prospective employer. Do not bad mouth anyone or vent.

It sounds like you were not feeling valued in any way and you probably made the best decision. When your employer let you know that clearly they do not value you, the best you can do is look for somewhere else to work where you can feel remotely appreciated.
