Mining Job - Where do I start?
Asked by Cowabunga-Dude!
I am looking to get into the mining industry but really don't know where to start. I have been an event manager, owned a training organisation and have managed several offices. I'm still in my 20's and want to get into this before I have too many responsibilities... I would really appreciate any advice you can provide to help me get started?

I have sons who work in the mining industry and now is a good time to become involved as there is lots of work and the pay is really high. The down side is that you generally have to work far from civilisation. Some mines do provide flights into city locations. You can apply for work if you are happy to relocate to out of the way areas. Unfortunately you do need some ability to use machinery and the mine stuff is huge as the boys have taken me on tours and inspections in an open cut and also an underground although I only got to see the above ground operations----huge vats of chemicals mixed with crushed rock. As the mining industry is going great at present there is a shortage for workers but you need to apply and follow up on all procedures. It can be rather lengthy and long winded but well worth it eventually. Your heath has to be very good as a medical is usually required. Your weight has to be at a reasonable level as moving around some of the apparatus requires a lot of ladder work so good luck and go to it. It won't be easy persevere my sons enjoy the work and the pay.

Reach out to companies that do mining - do you have preferences on what you'll mine or where you might live? If it's close, go out to a site and observe, and ask someone who works there to help. Alot of times, they give bonuses to people who bring in additional people. So if you ask someone (not in HR at first) to help you, they will tell you if you should give them your resume, contact hr directly, fill out paperwork during a particular time of day, or whatever. This way you get an intenal advocate, too.

First, you need to move to where the industry is; I would recommend researching where you want to live based on the choices, even considering Canada. You might consider all of the escalations in fatalities and injuries since the loosening of restrictions under the current administration . . . Think of the six men still buried under the mountain in Utah.
However, the choice is yours. I wish you the best of luck, whatever you do . . .
