How does one begin a career in publishing?
Asked by sallybowles
Does anyone have any info on publishing?
I am 26 and have a first class degree in literature. I am also a qualified teacher. How would I go about getting into publishing, what sort of role would be available to me and how much would I earn as a starting salary?
Any details gratefully received - Thanks!!

Since August 2005 I have been working as a Publishing Assistant for a company of Scientific Publishers. I spotted the job I am doing in the local newspaper, it was also advertised on the companies website.
The best way to get in is to start doing an Admin Role - I am earning roughly £12,000 a year, and the more senior Admin Roles earn anything up to £20,000 a year. There is scope for rapid promotion, at the beginning of the year my opposite number in Production transferred to a Admin Role that was paying between £14 - 16,000 and a few weeks ago he was promoted yet again to a role that pays between £17 - 19,000.
My supervisior also has a degree in literature, she joined the company 6 or 7 years ago at the bottom and she now oversees all the Admin Staff on the Journals Publishing side of the company and the Journals Production Assistant. I'm not sure how much she earns, but at a guess I would say £21,000 a year.
So keep looking in the local press and on the job pages of the websites of the companies you would be interested in working for.
