How do I go about getting into the field of construction?
Asked by Stephen
I'm very interested in getting involved with construction work, even more so since Destiny USA is currently being built in my city and there is likely to be work there constantly. I'm 18 and in very great shape but I cant find information on the web as to how I get into the field. Do I have to find a training school or such or should I just call up a construction company and fire away with my questions?

There are a couple ways. The best way is to call the local carpenters union and see how to start an apprenticeship. They will take 2-5 years to work you on different types of job sites and you will be very well trained at the end. The other way is to make sure you have all the tools you need, and lunch packed. Show up at a non union job site at 5 in the morning ready to work. Without any skills they will put you to work as a laborer, meaning you are a grunt, go-fer, clean up, and basic lackey. If you do good your first day they will keep you and eventually take the time to train you. My husband went the second route about 20 years ago, and now he is a regional construction manager.

you have alot in const most of them you can learn from the company but there's alot in consrtuction besides workers there's finishers, guys who drive water trucks, guys who drive heavy equipment, guys who bring concrete to job site, contractors, inspectors, etc all you have to do is choose one and stick to it.. some make more than others but anything over 25 is good money

The best thing to do is work for a company in the field you are interested in, work hard, and pay good attention to how everything is done. Starting from construction, saving and pricing material, managing employees, keeping up with paperwork for all purposes. and finaly contracting. Lots to it. But not for the hard worker, and the willing.
