What careers are available to me with an English degree from a liberal arts college?

Specifically, I'm trying to do something in publishing/communications/media. I do not want to teach. I have no experience in the above fields. What kind of entry level position should I look for? How do you start freelancing? I need to gain experience - any advice will help.

Teach. heh. You can get work in editing (go to www.craigslist.com for freelance job info) and outside of that- there's not much w.out a Master's in English. Even then, outside of editing and teaching, there's not a lot that's directly related. You can also get different types of jobs w. that. Many companies will hire you because you have a BA, regardless of what it's in because it shows a willingness to commit. Good luck!
