when should i take my vacation...when my boss is out or in the office?

my boss is leaving for 2 weeks in july, should i go when he's out or when he comes back? I would rather go during one of the weeks that he's out but not sure how to approach this to him as he might prefer I'm there when he gets back to catch up. I"m his assistant. Thanks to all.

always go on vacation when the boss is in, then come back when they leave so you don't have to deal with them or see them for a few weeks

Wow, if you're his assistant, I would think you should stay when he is out. U need to be able to take care of his business while he is gone. Senority get to take the days off over the person below them.

I would ask him before you make any travel plans, airlines, etc. He may have a preference.

I would assume there would be double the work to catch up on if you're both gone. He can handle himself for a week. Why don't you just ask him which he prefers?
If it were me, I'd go when he got back, then you have three weeks boss free! :)

Usually it is better to go at the same time your boss is out, but ask him. He may want you to hold down the fort while he's out. Other people just let their contacts know they are out, expect very few calls, and get a temp or another assistant to cover what does come in.

Take your vacation when he's IN. Then when he goes, you almost get another vacation yourself because he isn't around.

Don't do it while he's gone. As his asst. That would be bad. Take time to enjoy the fact that he's not there. When he get's back go on your vacation and enjoy even more time away from him!

Take it when he's in -- then you will have more time with out him. When he's gone, you'll be in the office ready to catch up and handle what needs to get done ... on your time!
So if he's gone for 2 weeks, there's two weeks without him -- and then if you're gone for a week, that's 3 weeks! So you get another week if you take it while he's in.

Work while he is on vacation and take yours when he comes back. You have vacation in the office when he is out of the office. Tell him you'll leave detailed notes for him, If he insist that you be there when he returns, delay your vacation by 1 day, to get him caught up then leave the next day.

As his assistant, I'm sure your boss (as does mine) depends on you to be his crutch when he's not around. If you are away from the office at the same time, do you trust someone to do your job as good as you can while you're away.....? That's what you must ask yourself, because if anything goes wrong, your boss may question your priorities and your reliability.

Will there be anyone else in the office if you should also be out while he is? It can really go either way. You may be amazed at how much you'll get done while your boss is out of the office, but at the same time, it's sometimes easier to get away while your boss is also away. If he's going to be out for two weeks, however, go for it...go the first week he's gone so that way the second week you can make sure everything is in order for his return.

It depends. I work in HR and find that most times when the Directors are out, they let their admin assistants go at the same time. But each boss has their own preference. I pesonally like my employees to be there when I'm gone. Just ask.
