How do you pursue a career as a music video director?
Asked by Amers
I am a junior in high school and have decided that this is my focus as a career as it incorporates all my major interests. The only problem is how do I go about getting a job as a music video director. What classes and major do I focus on in college? What companies should I aim working for? What do I apply for in the beginning? Which colleges offer the most in this field? ect. Any help is appreciated!

Do you have access to a camera? Digital or even an analogue like svhs or hi-8? Have you a computer you can use for edting? Do you have friends who are in bands? Start making a pop video for them. Simple as that. You should pursue stay with your college too but college can restrictive. You will get far more experience just by doing it yourself.

That is an interesting question! I would think it would be similar to a regular film director's track. You would probably need to take specialized training at a school that offers cinematography, editing, scheduling, etc classes. Most "art institute" schools have such programs. You'll need to learn about camera techniques, filming, getting an agent, freelancing, etc. Once you become pretty high-up the food chain, you would hire cinematographers to do the actual filming, etc. You'll want to join a professional organization of directors to boost your networking -- starting now if you can. Try this one: http://www.mvpa.com/ Start making short films now, putting together your portfolio which you can present in a quick interview. Good luck!
