How truthful should I be when applying for a part time job with a former employer?

I am a single mom who is going to be starting beauty school in november. I will be going to school 9-5 5 days a week, living at home and of course I need to work part time. I used to work at a deli that is right around the corner from my school and I left on good terms. I want to work there a few nights a week and maybe a full sunday or monday. I want to start now while they need help and it is busy. Should I be totally honest about my school plans or should I just keep them to myself? I am not sure if the owner will be turned off by me using this as my job to pay the bills while I am in school for 10 months then quit. What should I do?

YES. Considering your prospective boss is not likely to be paying you 30k+ a year plus benefits, he is already aware that almot 100% of any staff he hires will be transient! Be open about the fact that you are attending classes. Who knows...he might even recommend his Wife/Daughter/Mistress to you once you graduate and can hang out your own shingle.

If this were a former employer you may never need again in the future I would say definitely keep quiet about your future plans. The fact that he would hire you back means he/she obviously likes you and thinks highly of your work performance. You wouldn't want to shoot yourself on the foot and close this door forever in the event you may need them again. Be honest. Don't tell him about bills, but explain you are looking for something temporary because you are starting school in the fall. I'd take you back with the thought great! She wants to improve her life let me give her a leg up temporarily! I know a few employer's who feel the same as I do.

I'm in a similar situation (minus the kids). My advice, keep them on a need to know basis. I've been "completely honest" and it worked against me. At one interview I was told not to state my future plans because it comes as a complete shock (especially if they were going to hire you :( You can tell them a month before school and should they ask did you know before hand simply say no. I apploed to the program but didn't know which way it would go.

By all means be truthful. If you are already on good terms with the employer then they may take it exceptionally hard if they find out that you lied. You may need them as a reference in the future. Also- I'm sure you won't like this BUT there is no guarantee that you will have a massive clientele straight out of beauty school. You may end up staying part time with this deli longer than you anticipate. Don't ruin the chance at a job to help pay the bills until your other career takes off by being dishonest now.
