How to obtain a job as a receptionist/office clerk in a doctors office?

I am a college student looking to do work in a medical setting with tasks such as an office clerk or receptionist. This is not a job that just has regular applications and hiring signs. How would I approach this situation in the most professional manner. I was thinking of maybe calling and asking, mailing a resume'? Please help.

Sign up with the temp agencies. They will get you in the door. If the company likes your work, they will hire you full time.
