You must be willing to take free vacations to all inclusive resorts in hot sunny locales.

I don't think education needs to play a role in being a Travel Agent. What you need is to work with airlines for discount tickets and you in return sell them to customers. The more you sell the better your airlines' rebates. You may need cash to rollover unless all your sales are via cash only. For corporations, credit of 30 days is common practice.

Travel agents get paid on commission. Some are paid a base salary and the rest made up with commissions. If you live in the USA, travel is NOT a good area to get into. Due to over the top security issues, tourism to USA from foreign travellers has fallen by 8 to 10 percent. And is expected to drop even more if the body searching at the airports continues. If you live in or have knowledge of Europe, Asia, Africa or South America, you can make a good living because tourists are choosing to go to those places now. For education, you would need to do a travel agency course at the local college. You need to know how to write tickets, how to use computer reservation systems, you need to have knowledge of tourism areas, and you need to know about airlines, airport codes and airline routes, visa & passport requirements (which can change at the drop of a hat) and other such things. I did a 3 months travel agency course after I left school, and I really enjoyed it. But the course never told us that the job only paid by commissions, and I changed my career choice pretty fast. I am not a sales person (pushy) by nature and I detest sales people who pester me to buy something.

No school/education is needed, but the more you educate yourself about the industry the better. Advantages: Fam trips - Travel for FREE or wholesale prices. Tax breaks. Make commission on your own travel Disadvantages: Not enough time to travel the world.
