How to get supervisor or management experience?
Asked by raul3
I am currently in school and work a full time job in my field of study. I am looking to the future and all of the jobs I would need my BS to apply for also ask for some type of management experience. I have about twenty hours a week I can commit to this. I would rather get paid but am not opposed to volunteering so long as I receive solid management experience.

Join some organizations on campus and try to become an officer (President, Vice President) etc. Or just volunteer to be head of some committees. When you are being considered for a management position, they usually ask questions like "Tell me about a time you were in charge of a group of people." "Tell me what you did to motivate people in a group." etc.

Go to the Job service on your campus and look at the postings. Make an appointment to see a job counselor and tell them just what you asked on this question. You could end up working for the school in a management position, you never know until you ask.

depending on the company size it will be difficult for you to jump into a manager position. instead look for job that offer management training. many companies offer a track to a manager position after 1-3 years on the job. ask about these tracks specifically. in the meantime get all the leadership experience you can. whether it is leading a group project in class or extra activities. that way you can show your leadership potential. good luck.
