What is the best way to get my foot in the door at an I.T. or Technical position, without having college?
Asked by Rockstar from another dimension
Right now I am in desperate need of a new job, I'm a cable technician (cable guy) making too little money to pay my bills. I really want to get into some sort of Computer, IT, or technical position, since I have a very strong interest in modern (and future) technology, and I'm real good with technical and electronic things. Heres the problem, despite the fact that I have quite a bit of personal knowledge, and learn the stuff quick. I have no actual college, certifications, or professional experience, (other than installing cable, internet, and VOIP). So what I'm wondering is if anyone has any ideas of a Technical type position who will hire me based on the type of experience I just described? I know people are going to say "go to college".At the moment theres no way I'd be able to afford, or have the time for college. However I'd be willing to go in the future to advance my career, if anyone has recommendations for the best courses, for what I'm looking for, let me know, thanks. One more detail I forgot to mention, I do need to start out making at least around $15 an hour.

Apply for jobs as a lab monkey - setting up computers, running the cables, plugging them in, etc.
