In many parts of the country the labor unions make it next to impossible to work in the building trades except through them. Ask at the office of the trade you're thinking of.
Where there is little or no labor union control, you can ask for a job right at the building site. The workers there can direct you to the office or the person who does the hiring.
I was a small contractor for all of my working years. I hired right on the job. I always preferred men who never worked in the building trades, that way I was able to train them to do things my way.
Of course he word construction covers a lot of different trades. Are you interested in masonry, carpentry,( framing or finish ), roofing, finishing, plastering, dry wall, electrical, plumbing or just what ? Each trade has its own requirements.
Make up you mind as to just what kind of construction work would interest you, then ask those on the job. Catch them at their lunch time. Otherwise they might not have time to tell you very much.
I would advise to to first approach an independent builder with a small work group. They're usually more friendly and helpful. Good luck.
30+ years in all of the building trades.

drive around construction areas in your town. they post their name on everything. Base your desicion on what they build and what you would like to build.

Look in your local paper. There's probably 20-some odd different companies hiring for different things like carpenters, concrete workers, windows, etc...................................

HI my name is Eddie...Your best bet is to look in the yellow pages for labor organizations..All the unions are posted from electrical to masonry...call them and tell them that you want to take an apprenticeship in the field that you like..Plumming electrical masonry painting ect...call them and they will tell you the companies you have to get with and once your with them ask them to endenture you and then you will be going to school to learn your trade and working at the same time...Going union is the best way to go..You get the best pay and medical dental vision and you build on your pensions...Good luck.

Sometime a good approach would be to take a look a particular trade and go to the Union hall and join an apprenticeship. Or you can go to a Technical School or College.
Department of Labor has Apprenticeship programs.
