How much training required to be a travel agent?
Asked by NYC_grl_2004
Ok, so I'm looking at different part time job options for when I graduate school. I don't want to go to college but I'm will to do a year or two of tech school, or on the job training would be best. I was wondering if you need any extra schooling to be a travel agent or if that is even an option for a part time job. I know the demand for travel agents just depends on the economy at the time but how popular is that now? And how much, if any training is involved. If anyone out there is a travel agent, any imput would be appreciated.

To be a travel agent there really isn't too much training except on the computer. The computer travel agents have is from the airlines. They have their own way of looking at flight availability, obtaining seats, hotel and car & flight reservations. Also, you must get to know different destinations. Alot of the travel schools you see advertise isn't really neccesary to go to. Why through $1500-$3500 for a 6 month training course when some agencies will train you on the job. Also, look at some of the travel wholesalers such as Go-Go . They have alot of reservation centers around the country. Give them a call to see if they are hiring. Most likely they are. They will train you.
I used to be in the travel industry and worked for both wholesale and retail travel agencies.

I don't think there is much training involved. Look into the job openings to see if they require a definite education level, if there is experience required, or if it says training provided, etc. Yahoo!'s HotJobs is a good place to start. I know that there is a degree offered at most universities for Parks, Recreation, and Tourism. This can be finished in as little as 3 years (Bachelors).
