It depends. If you live in a big city, you have a better chance to make more money, than if you live in a small city. However the cost of living in bigger cities are higher than small cities. So in the long run, basically it's the same. If you work on commission, it will depend on how much you will make per labor hour. For instance if a job pays 5 hours to complete and it takes you more than 5 hours you will only get paid for 5 hours. However if you complete that job in 3 hours you still get paid for 5 hours labor. So working on commission good be a good thing if you are fast, and if your manager gives you the jobs. But you could also stand around all day while all the others are working, in this case you will make nothing, unless your employer has a set weekly wage for you in case it is slow, or the boss doesn't like you, so he gives all the gravy jobs to the ones he likes and gives you all the crapping jobs like squeaks and rattles. Also depends on if you work for a car dealer or a small shop. You might want to consider working for a regular wage per hour, based on a 40 hour week, if you made $13.00 per hour and was at work for 40 hours you would get paid $13.00 for every hour you were on the clock. As far as being an auto mechanic, I wouldn't encourage it, the job sucks. Plus after you get a certain age they want to replace you because you can't keep up, because you are getting too old. They would rather replace you with someone younger and dumber, but I guess that is part of being an American. Good Luck
My husband has been a Mechanic for 34 years, he is now just doing minor repairs and gasing up cars, he said he's too old to compete for a pay check.

If you want to double a car mechanic wage... Be a truck mechanic or heavy equipment mechanic. Car mechanics are usually flat rate/paid per job. Truck and Heavy equipment mechanics are usually hourly, which ever you choose, do not accept salary. Most of the money is made in overtime. The demand is much higher in the diesel mechanic industry.
